Summary: Saarbrucken is the capital of Saarland and an important centre for water sports in southwest Germany. The town has a distinct cosmopolitan atmosphere and a delightfully unique culture that blends French and German influences. Saarlouis is a delightful town full of French and Prussian history. Many beautiful monuments which bear witness to the town’s colourful past are preserved here. At Sierck les Baines you can enjoy some fantastic views over the Moselle from the castle, which has been destroyed several times in war over the years. Further on you will come to Metz, which has long occupied a major place amongst the towns of eastern France. There are some picturesque old streets here and the Regates port, developed on a splendid stretch of water, is one of the most pleasant in France. Liverdun is situated on a hill overlooking the Moselle and is often called the Switzerland of Lorraine. There are also some excellent cycle paths here. The town of Hesse is home to the ruins of a Benedictine Abbey dating from the 11th century, which now acts as the village church. The crystal makers of Hartzviller is just four kilometres away where you can visit the factory and purchase some of the finished products.
